The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique is a gentle, drug-free, hands-on therapy that is suitable for men, women and children of all ages – from newborns to seniors.

Bowen’s small rolling movements are made over muscle, tendons and ligaments at specific points on the body where the most tension and stress tends to be held. These unusual moves trigger the brain to switch off the ‘fight or flight’ stress response and encourage the body to release tension and stress throughout, helping the body to physically and chemically rebalance.

Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognize and make the changes it requires to release and repair, returning the body as close as possible to normal. Between each set of moves, there are rest periods for a few minutes, to allow the brain to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.

I was recommended to try the Bowen Technique when I developed extremely painful sciatica. After a number of sessions, the relief was remarkable. Bowen has also been successful in treating pain in my right shoulder. I would recommend this treatment to anybody, which I have on a number of occasions.

As the body’s processes gradually normalise, the body’s natural repair processes and defence mechanisms are able to recover and get to work in focusing on addressing even long-standing complaints.

Bowen has a remarkable record of success with clients affected by an astonishingly wide range of conditions, injuries and health issues … often when nothing else has helped.

Bowen is generally pleasant to receive, each session lasting up to 60 minutes, depending on the age of the client and the nature of the condition. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during the treatment.

Where did The Bowen Technique come from?

Bowen originated from Tom Bowen who was an amazing bodyworker living in Geelong, Victoria, Australia from1916-1982. He was reputed to have been a remarkable man who could spot the root of people’s problems on sight.

He worked with a small team of assistants and was reported to have treated 30-35 people each hour, many having travelled from all over Australia to see him. In 1974, Tom Bowen’s clinic submitted evidence to the Complementary Therapy Council of Australia to confirm that he was at that time treating 13,000 people per year!

The name ‘Bowen Technique’ was given to his work after his death in 1982. The Bowen Technique is a system of bodywork that is based on the basic principles that Tom taught to his team of assistants.

The Bowen Technique was introduced to the UK in the 1990’s and is now practiced by thousands of Bowen practitioners all over the World.

Key Features of The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique has unique characteristics and is quite different to any other type of therapy. It is non-invasive, pleasant to receive and for most, the treatment evokes a deep sense of calm and relaxation. Here are some of the features:-

  • Each Bowen treatment is tailored to address an individual’s symptoms and needs. No diagnosis is required or will ever be given. Bowen always treats the whole person with the aim of helping the body into the best possible situation to identify and correct problem areas and to restore balance.
  • Bowen works with the soft tissue; muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, using no manipulation or force. In fact a Bowen move is a very specific gentle rolling move applied with no more pressure than you could comfortably tolerate on your eyeball.
  • Each treatment treats the whole person and seeks to address the root cause of the problem rather than purely treating the symptoms.
  • Each Bowen move is made at a key structural point in the body that the brain uses as a natural reference point to determine the body’s posture. (Many of these points refer back to significant embryological and developmental structures). Therefore moves at these precise points have a huge effect on the way that the body holds itself.
  • The Bowen Technique works with the dynamic relationship between the muscles and the nervous system. And one of Bowen’s trump cards is the affect it has on reducing stress in the body.
  • During the treatment, in response to these specific moves, the brain is triggered to switch off the ‘fight or flight’ stress response; implicated in many health issues, and revert to its natural ‘alpha’ healing state.
  • This has a hugely positive and often far-reaching effect, allowing blood pressure, breathing rate and other vital processes such as digestion, the immune system and repair mechanisms to normalise and regenerate. It often promotes a feeling of calm and deep relaxation and is instrumental in the release of tightness and tensions in muscles, tendons and ligaments throughout.
  • Each treatment is punctuated throughout with breaks when therapist leaves the room. This is to allow the brain time to process the moves with minimal distractions and is an important and critical element of the treatment.
  • Some individuals may experience instant changes at the time of the treatment. For most it is in the days that follow after a Bowen that their body in its own good time will start to make adjustments and changes.
  • Very often the type and/or site of pain changes in the days following a treatment as the tensions start to release and the compensation patterns start to correct.
  • For many symptoms and conditions, complete resolution is possible. For others Bowen can make a significant difference to the quality of life through effective pain, inflammation and stress management.
