Whiplash and Bowen

Whiplash is a widely used term to describe a neck injury from an impact that causes a vigorous movement of the head either forwards and backwards or side to side; often resulting from a road accident, a violent blow to the head or a collision during contact sports.

This common occurrence can also be a major contributing factor to migraines and headaches, pains in the shoulders or arms, tingling and numbness as well as seemingly unrelated issues such as tinnitus, vision and sinus problems.

Frequently, an impact of this nature can have far-reaching effects throughout the body which, if unaddressed, can lead to future problems including joint issues, lower, mid-back and pelvic pain.

I have had, for several years, painful back, neck and shoulders following a car accident. I have also suffered painful, achy knees for many years. I have visited both physiotherapists and an osteopath with limited success. Now, having had several sessions of Bowen, I have far less pain in back, shoulder and neck and the knees are almost pain free making walking so much better.
I would recommend Bowen to anyone in pain. It causes no pain and reduces it substantially.

Such a major jolt or blow can create tensions and stresses that throw the whole body out of line, resulting in compensation patterns developing which alter the way the body holds itself. If not corrected, these imbalances can put extra strain and load on various muscle groups, tendons and ligaments (soft tissue) that over time will eventually take their toll, creating weaknesses, excessive wear and tear and eventually pain.

A good analogy is to imagine our bodies are like tents. Held up and kept stable by the tension in the guy lines, with the main tent pole running through the middle. Increase the tension in the guy lines on one side and the pegs will eventually ‘pop out’ on the opposite side. In our bodies the ‘popping out of the pegs’ is basically where we will be feeling pain. The problem is more often than not the incorrect tension of a guy line (soft tissue) on the opposite side or elsewhere in the body. Clicking, forcing or manipulating the spine back into line will only ever be a short-term solution until the tension in the ‘guy ropes’ has been adjusted and balanced.

In other words, for successful treatment of whiplash; and indeed any joint pain, tightness or tension for that matter; it is essential to release soft tissue throughout to ensure total alignment of the whole body.

We use The Bowen Technique to influence the soft tissue tension throughout the body with an aim to resolve the root cause of the issue rather than just putting a sticking plaster over the symptoms.

After a recent car accident, I had a flare up of a longstanding back problem, which caused me to be in pain when walking and running.
After one Bowen session I felt extremely relaxed, like a different person and felt a great deal of energetic changes during the treatment. 2 days after the treatment the pain in my lower back totally subsided and is no longer a problem. This has allowed me to go about daily life feeling much more comfortable and happier in myself. I’m looking forward to my next treatment.

During a treatment, each unique Bowen move triggers the brain to switch off the ‘fight or flight stress response’. As a result, inflammation and stress levels are reduced and all the body’s processes, including the immune system and repair mechanisms are boosted. Over the course of a number of sessions, Bowen helps the body get into the best possible situation to repair and heal immediate injuries and recover from shock and any associated emotional or physical stresses.

And as Bowen treats the body as a whole, it is helping to rebalance, release tensions and correct the body’s alignment throughout, nipping in the bud the possibility of further problems developing.

So if your therapist is only treating your shoulder for ‘frozen shoulder’, your neck for ‘neck pain’ or ‘whiplash’ or your lower back for ‘sciatica’, it may be time to re-think your long-term approach.

Please Note: This treatment should not be seen as a substitute for essential medical treatment. Consult your doctor if unsure.
